Juice the Lemons
- Roll the lemons on a countertop with the palm of your hand to make them juicier. Slice the lemons in half and squeeze out the juice using a citrus juicer or by hand. Remove any seeds but leave some pulp for authenticity. You should get about 1 cup of lemon juice.
Make the Simple Syrup
- In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup of water and 1 cup of sugar. Heat over medium heat until the sugar fully dissolves, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and let it cool to room temperature.
Combine Lemon Juice and Syrup
- In a large pitcher, pour the lemon juice and the cooled simple syrup. Stir well to combine.
Add Cold Water
- Add 4 cups of cold water to the pitcher. Stir and taste-test the lemonade. For more tartness, add extra lemon juice. For less tang, dilute with more water.
Chill and Serve
- Refrigerate the lemonade for at least 1 hour to allow the flavors to meld. Serve over ice in glasses and garnish with lemon slices if desired.
Notes
Use Fresh Lemons:
Fresh lemons are key to capturing that natural, bright flavor.
Avoid bottled lemon juice as it can taste artificial.
Customize the Sweetness: Start with the suggested amount of sugar, but adjust according to your preference for the perfect sweet-tart balance.
Don't Skip the Cooling Step:
Chilling allows the lemonade to reveal its full flavor.
If short on time, add extra ice cubes to expedite cooling.
Experiment With Flavors:
Add pureed fruits (strawberries, raspberries) or a hint of spice (cayenne) to mimic Trader Joe's flavored variations.
Sparkling Version:
Replace half the water with sparkling water or club soda for a fizzy twist.
Storage:
Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 5-7 days. Freeze in ice cube trays for up to 3 months.
