Ingredients

  • 6-8 medium lemons preferably fresh and ripe
  • 1 cup granulated sugar adjust to taste
  • 5 cups cold water divided: 1 cup for syrup, 4 cups for dilution
  • Ice for serving
Optional Add-Ins:
  • 1 cup fresh strawberry puree for strawberry lemonade variation
  • Stevia honey, or agave (for low-calorie option)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh mint leaves for garnish or muddling

Equipment

  • Citrus juicer or reamer
  • Small saucepan
  • Large pitcher
  • Stirring spoon
  • Measuring cups

Method

Juice the Lemons
  1. Roll the lemons on a countertop with the palm of your hand to make them juicier. Slice the lemons in half and squeeze out the juice using a citrus juicer or by hand. Remove any seeds but leave some pulp for authenticity. You should get about 1 cup of lemon juice.
Make the Simple Syrup
  1. In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup of water and 1 cup of sugar. Heat over medium heat until the sugar fully dissolves, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and let it cool to room temperature.
Combine Lemon Juice and Syrup
  1. In a large pitcher, pour the lemon juice and the cooled simple syrup. Stir well to combine.
Add Cold Water
  1. Add 4 cups of cold water to the pitcher. Stir and taste-test the lemonade. For more tartness, add extra lemon juice. For less tang, dilute with more water.
Chill and Serve
  1. Refrigerate the lemonade for at least 1 hour to allow the flavors to meld. Serve over ice in glasses and garnish with lemon slices if desired.

Notes

Use Fresh Lemons:
Fresh lemons are key to capturing that natural, bright flavor.
Avoid bottled lemon juice as it can taste artificial.
Customize the Sweetness: Start with the suggested amount of sugar, but adjust according to your preference for the perfect sweet-tart balance.
Don't Skip the Cooling Step:
Chilling allows the lemonade to reveal its full flavor.
If short on time, add extra ice cubes to expedite cooling.
Experiment With Flavors:
Add pureed fruits (strawberries, raspberries) or a hint of spice (cayenne) to mimic Trader Joe's flavored variations.
Sparkling Version:
Replace half the water with sparkling water or club soda for a fizzy twist.
Storage:
Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 5-7 days. Freeze in ice cube trays for up to 3 months.
