Ingredients

For the Apple Brown Sugar Syrup
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup brown sugar light or dark works, but dark gives a richer flavor
  • 2 medium apples, cored and diced Honeycrisp or Granny Smith recommended
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves optional
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch salt
For the Macchiato
  • 2 shots espresso or 1/2 cup strong brewed coffee
  • 1 cup milk of choice whole milk creates the creamiest texture, but any milk works
  • 2-3 tablespoons apple brown sugar syrup
  • as needed ice for iced version
For the Apple Crisp Topping
  • 2 tablespoons apple brown sugar syrup
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • as needed caramel drizzle store-bought or homemade

Equipment

  • cocktail shaker or mason jar
  • measuring spoons

Method

Prepare the Apple Brown Sugar Syrup
  1. In a medium saucepan, combine water and brown sugar over medium heat. Stir until sugar completely dissolves, about 2-3 minutes. Add diced apples, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves (if using). Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 10-12 minutes until apples are soft and the mixture has thickened slightly. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract and salt. Let cool for 10 minutes, then strain through a fine-mesh sieve, pressing on solids to extract maximum flavor. Allow syrup to cool completely before using (speeds up when refrigerated in a shallow container).
Prepare Your Espresso
  1. Brew 2 shots of espresso using an espresso machine, Moka pot, or AeroPress. If using brewed coffee instead, make it extra strong (use twice the coffee grounds). Let cool slightly if making the iced version.
Prepare the Milk
  1. For hot macchiato: Heat milk in a small saucepan or milk frother until steaming (about 150°F). For iced macchiato: Use cold milk straight from the refrigerator. If possible, froth the milk until it has a light, airy texture with small bubbles.
Assemble Your Hot Apple Crisp Macchiato
  1. Add 2-3 tablespoons of apple brown sugar syrup to your cup. Pour in the steamed milk, holding back the foam. Gently pour espresso through the milk. Top with milk foam. Drizzle with additional apple brown sugar syrup mixed with cinnamon. Add a light caramel drizzle in a crosshatch pattern.
Assemble Your Iced Apple Crisp Macchiato
  1. Fill glass with ice. Add 2-3 tablespoons of apple brown sugar syrup. Pour in cold milk, leaving room for espresso. Slowly pour espresso shots over the milk to create the layered effect. Top with apple syrup-cinnamon mixture and caramel drizzle.
